Team Project Description
Protecting the Elderly
The Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago (LAFMC)?the principal provider of free civil legal services in Chicago and suburban Cook County?invites MPP volunteer attorneys to join the ?Protecting the Elderly? project. This team of attorneys will have several unique opportunities to assist Chicago?s elderly, both in the City of Chicago and surrounding Cook County suburbs. LAFMC staff will provide top-notch volunteer training and mentoring for all of these activities.

DEFENDING AGAINST FORECLOSURES

Each year, countless elderly unaided by legal counsel face the possibility of losing their homes. You can make a significant difference in the outcome of these heartbreaking cases. LAFMC invites you to help senior citizens facing foreclosure by informing them about their options and providing resources that can help them to keep their homes. You will also have the opportunity to advocate on behalf of senior citizens who have been victimized by predatory lending practices. The time commitment on these cases can be small or extensive, depending on your availability.

SERVING RESIDENTS OF LONG-TERM CARE FACILITIES

LAFMC is also seeking MPP attorneys to serve as Volunteer Ombudsmen in suburban Cook County long-term care facilities. Volunteer Ombudsmen serve a vital role in ensuring the well being of facility residents, educating them about their rights, answering questions, and helping them to resolve complaints against facility management. Volunteer Ombudsmen will be assigned to the long-term care facility most convenient to them, making visits to the facility once or twice a month.

STAFFING A LEGAL CLINIC

Finally, MPP volunteer attorneys will have the opportunity to provide brief civil legal advice to elderly residents of suburban Cook County. Through LAFMC, the North Shore Senior Center, located at 161 Northfield Road in Northfield, Illinois, hosts a legal clinic for area residents age 60 and older. MPP volunteer lawyers are needed to team up to staff the clinic, which is held in the morning twice a month. The LAFMC is also in the process of replicating the North Shore Senior Center model in the western suburbs. Although the location of this new clinic has not yet been determined, MPP volunteer lawyers are invited to volunteer for this effort as well.
